Toby welcomed people, particularly new participants and everyone introduced themselves. Activities of the club to date were reviewed for new members.

Toby and Andy Levine attended President Jeff Lehman's inauguration and reported that the weekend was wonderful. Toby feels positively about his leadership.

Brochures were made available for Cornell Adult University, with several people recommending participation. Toby had just returned from a CAU trip to Mexico and Kim spoke highly of the summer programs.

Toby reported much change in the academic administration at Cornell. Over two years, there will have been new Deans for the schools of Arts & Sciences, Law, Art & Architecture, and Human Ecology.

People were reminded that The Chronicle, published by the administration and The Daily Sun, published by students, are both available on line. Also, our website has a link to the Cornell Cybertower, an adult continuing ed site. The library has a pilot program to provide access to the Cornell Libraries.

Zoe Neaderland has moved to Philadelphia for a new job; Kathy Erickson was voted to fill her position as secretary of the board. This leaves a vacancy for a general member on the board. Those interested should contact Toby.

The balance in the Cornell Club bank account is $1,665.56

Toby recommended that the board begin to think about new and renewing memberships. We would like to see a modest amount of growth. Carol agreed to form a committee and start to plan. There are two challenges: campaigning and updating the database. Renewals would be easy to do by email, but Janice reports some trouble with ISPs treating our email as spam.

Upcoming Programs

There was spirited discussion on recent and upcoming programs:

  • The fall Antigone discussion/pot luck dinner was highly praised.

  • There was discussion of a speaker for the spring. Elaine Angst, a speaker from Cornell who presents a historical view of Cornell, can only come on Thursday, May 6 or Sunday, which is Mother's Day. People generally agreed that a non-holiday Sunday would be a better time, so a different speaker would be our first choice. Toby will contact Edith Lederer to see if she is available. Edith Lederer '64, is the Chief UN Correspondent for the Associated Press. She has worked for the AP for decades and lived all over the world, most recently, for a number of years in London. Edie also is one of the nine authors of War Torn: Stories of War from the Women Reporters Who Covered Vietnam (Random House, 2002). People agreed that 5:00 or 6:00 would be a good time for the talk. Tiffany volunteered to help Hilda with the event.

  • Suggestions have been made to look into having events at Ventfort Hall, possible through Kevin Sprague, The Rockwell Museum, and Williams College. Other possibilities are events at Hancock Shaker Village, Jacob's Pillow, Tanglewood and Chesterwood.

  • There was agreement that the club should hold more small social events. Tiffany, Kathy, Janice and Kim agreed to get together to brainstorm and plan an event for the spring.

  • The summer picnic is tentatively scheduled for August 29.

Toby asked if we should ask for someone to chair a CAAAN group or if we should put it off for a year. Columbia County is already being taken care of, so this would be only for Berkshire County. It was agreed that we should start by getting information from Cornell on the number of applications and acceptances from the area.

Board positions that will be up for election next year are: President, Membership VP, Treasurer, and three general members.

The next board meeting will be April 15th at 7:00 pm at Toby Levine's house with, we remain hopeful, more delicious confections from Carol.

Respectfully submitted,
Kathy Erickson
